Tolerance and understanding are themes in these stories, and should apply to all people. I pray that parents and teachers will correct these historical mistakes when their children/students read this story today. Alcott believed in the late 1800’s, when this was written. The story states that all the Native Americans were killed because “they gave the Pilgrims trouble”. Many of the Native Americans were friendly with the Pilgrims, and they were responsible for teaching the Pilgrims how to farm successfully so they would not starve through another winter. My only gripe is the history of Thanksgiving told to the young people towards the end of “Little Men”.
If only people could still behave with such morality, and show love and kindness for their fellow man, the world would not be in the mess it is today. We experience the joys and grief of the family in both stories. A sortable list in reading order and chronological order with publication date, genre, and rating. The sorrow of the Civil War on soldiers’ families is definitely felt. Series list: Little Women (5 Books) by Louisa May Alcott. Perhaps during that time period, without the outside influences of media and news, it was easier to focus on your little corner of the world and make the best of what you have. I still think that, but with a more worldly perspective, it is hard to believe that people could be that good all the time. When I first read the books I was totally enthralled and thought how wonderful a family the Marches are. The narrator does an excellent job at voicing the characters, male and female, young and older. I first read these books decades ago as a young teen.
